FAQ: Infant Eczema
20% of babies suffer from infant eczema. Infant eczema can be identified as a rash or dermatitis of small red dots or patches on your baby’s skin. It can occur anywhere on an infant’s body. A first step in prevention of infant eczema is to try to keep your baby's skin from becoming too dry.
While at its core, infant eczema is just very dry and irritated skin, it can be very uncomfortable for your baby. A baby's skin is soft, smooth, and extremely sensitive and the choice in products you use on your baby’s skin or how you wash what touches your baby’s skin – like clothing - can make a big difference. Regular adult soaps and shampoos can be harsh, irritating, and drying. Even baby care products that include known irritants such as fragrances and dyes can aggravate infant eczema.
Properly cleansing your baby with gentle, safe products is critical in the treatment and prevention of infant eczema. (Note: Your baby may only require bathing 2-3 times per week..)
Steps for bathing and treatment of infant eczema:
- Place baby in a shallow bath of warm water and be sure to support their head
- Wash and shampoo your baby at the end of the bath so the skin isn't soaked in soapy water. Pour more warm water over their chest and tummy occasionally so they don't get cold
- After bathing, pat dry with a towel (don’t rub) and cover up with a hooded towel for warmth.
- Apply a moisturizer
You should look for the most gentle and safest skincare products when treating infant eczema, including using a mild soap. Years of research have led to the development of newer cleansing agents, which are less irritating to the skin.
